GrayneAgainst is the managed systems studio of Afeaki LLC. Operating from North Salt Lake, Utah, we design and integrate fine joinery systems for shops, makers, fabricators, and production studios. Each engagement is scoped around real workflows, real stock, and a bench that has to hold a deadline.
01Joinery Systems Architecture
Every durable piece begins with a decision about how grain meets grain. We architect the full joinery stack — the joint families, the grain orientation, the cutting sequence, and the clamp-up strategy — before material is ever committed. Our architecture documents record target tolerances to the thousandth, define which joint fits which corner of the load path, and lay out the order of operations so every assembly lands square and stays square through the glue cure and beyond. Whether the work is a hand-cut dovetail carcass, a production run of half-lapped frames, or a structural mortise and tenon assembly, the architecture is where precision is bought at the cheapest price.
02Workshop Platform Integration
A bench is only as good as the room that surrounds it. We integrate the shop platform as one co ordinated system: the assembly bench and workholding, the dust collection spine, task lighting and shadow control, machine islands, and stock storage that feeds every station in the correct order. We study the movement of material and the return of the maker to the bench, then we place each element so the flow shortens with every trip. The platform plan covers flooring, electrical, extraction ducting, and air quality so that the room reads as a single calm, dry, well lit bench room rather than a collection of competing machines.
03Custom Fabrication Development
Repeatable work needs repeatable setup. We develop custom jigs, fixtures, and small production tooling that make a joint land the same way every time. Reference surfaces, seating stops, and registration pins are designed to take the guesswork out of a busy day. We build and test prototype fixtures against real production stock, refine the cutting and clamping behavior, and hand over fixtures together with a clear setup sheet. The tooling we deliver is quiet, easy to read, and never fights the hand using it.
04Materials Data Pipelines
Lumber is never a steady input, and estimates are only as honest as the data behind them. We build pipelines that track moisture content, grain figure, available length, and yield from the lumber rack through the cutlist to the finished panel. Sourcing decisions, purchasing thresholds, and job estimates all draw from the same ledger. When a board enters the rack, it earns a record; when a cut draws from it, the yield is posted back. The result is a shop whose numbers actually describe its wood and whose waste is a measured fact rather than a sad surprise at the end of the quarter.
05Shop Safety and Compliance
A safe room is an efficient room. We build guarding, dust management, tooling sharpness, and clear walkways into the shop floor rather than adding them as an afterthought. We run audits of extraction capacity, machine guarding, blade and plane condition, chemical storage, and emergency access. From the audit we write the standard operating procedures that keep a busy operation lawful, legible, and unhurried, so that a full order book never becomes a corner cut on safety.
06Managed Operations and Support
Handover is not the last touch. We offer scheduled sharpening and tuning rounds for plane irons, chisels, and saw blades, periodic inspection of fixtures and benches, reassessment of workflows as the order book changes, and on call support during busy seasons. Managed operations keep the bench running straight between jobs, so the maker spends daylight making rather than repairing a mis registered fence or dull edge. Support never stops at a fix; it stops when the process no longer produces the problem.
